With a Little Help from Our Friends

We, at Mankato Fair Trade, continue to strive to expand our programs to bring fair trade awareness, education and new products to the community. We do this through announcements and links on our website, www.maftti.org. In 2022, because of security advances, our old website was not supported and we needed to have a new website created. We are still carrying a debt on the new website and are asking your help to clear that debt. You can donate by sending a check to: Mankato Fair Trade 2040 Roe Crest Drive North Mankato, MN.  56003

October is Fair Trade Month

October marks National Fair Trade Month in the United States: a month dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of fair trade, and the promotion of buying and using socially and commercially responsible products. If you’re reading this , you’ve probably already heard of fair trade. Yet, despite the term’s ubiquity, its full meaning still eludes most of us, with the numerous fair trade entities — from certification bodies to national organizations and international networks — adding to the confusion. Fair trade came about when it became clear that globalization and free trade facilitated the Global North’s exploitation of producers Read More

Fair Trade USA in the Ivory Coast

Over the course of three years, Fair Trade USA carried out a mixed methods study in nine countries and across seven commodities in order to understand the impact of Premium Investments. Premium funds are accrued through the program’s unique requirement that commodities bought on fair trade terms include additional resources for community investment. They are invested in worker-controlled Community Development Funds. Unlike other economic development programs, this model results in workers subsequently voting on how to spend the funds earned through their fair trade agreements. Among other positive outcomes, the Fair Trade Certified™ program was found to be a driver Read More

Remembering Emily Kracht, Loyola, and Mankato Fair Trade

by Paul Renshaw Founding Chair, Mankato Fair Trade . 35 years ago, if you were a coffee farmer anywhere in the Americas, East Africa or South-East Asia, you would have been very worried by the world price of the commodity that your livelihood depended on. You would probably not have been able to make ends meet. This “coffee crisis” of the late 1980s spurred the growth of the international “Fair Trade” or “Fairtrade” movement. Among other benefits, participating farmers and other small producers in the Global South, were enabled, through innovative product labeling, to receive fairer prices and thus reward Read More

Women & Fair Trade

Women are incredibly important in the global agriculture system! Supporting gender equality and the development of women leaders in farmer organizations is a key piece of Fairtrade’s work to make global trade fair for everyone involved. What does this look like? Here are a few examples: - Fairtrade Standards that prohibit discrimination based on gender or marital status, prohibit sexual harassment or abuse, and require farmer organizations to develop a gender equality policy - Women’s Leadership Schools that strengthen the business skills of women farmers

Sustainability is Top Trend for 2023

Fair Trade America WASHINGTON – Dec. 13, 2022 – Fairtrade America – the world’s most recognized label for social justice and sustainability – today shared five key trends the organization expects will drive consumer choices and brand action in 2023. Despite inflation and rising prices on products we use everyday, from gas to groceries, research shows that many consumers are still making thoughtful choices while shopping, choosing products that align with their values.
